Best Skiing Locations in Japan

Winter in Japan can be extremely cold, but it can also be unbelievable for the ardent skier. When someone mentions skiing in Japan, the first thing that comes to mind is Nagano. After all, it did host the 1998 Winter Olympics and the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games.

The Nagano Prefecture is located in the Chubu region on Japan's main island of Honshu. The capital of the Nagano Prefecture is the city of Nagano. The Central Highlands, known as the Roof of Japan, Mt Fuji and eight other of Japan's twelve highest mountains, are located in this prefecture.

At the base of the Northern Alps, (Matsumoto Area), you'll find Hakuba Village. Hakuba hosted several of the 1998 Winter Olympics events. The village has 7 fantastic ski areas with a range of different terrains to suit all levels from beginners to experts. And, it's only about a one hour drive from Nagano I.C.

Other highly recommended ski resorts in the Northern Alps include:

1. Shiga Kogen Heights (Yamanouchi Town), with an elevation between 1500 and 2300 metres - this is the largest skiing destination in Japan

2. Madarao Highlands Ski Resort in Ilyama City, situated at the base of the Madarao Mountain

3. Nozawa Onsen

The Kurumayama Highlands Snow Resort in the Suwa Area (Chino City) is the place to ski if you want to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Mount Fuji and the Japanese Alps. It also boasts a very dependable snow season due to its high altitude - early December to early April.

All ski resorts are accessible by road and rail. There is also an airport at Matsumoto. Be sure to check local guides before you leave for the most current weather update, as transport links can be affected by adverse snow and ice conditions.
